Abstract
Protein drugs are increasingly becoming a very important class of therapeutic agents with the rapid advancements in biotechnology. The application of proteins as therapeutic agents depends largely on the design of an appropriate controlled release system. Use of appropriate delivery systems, which can protect the protein drugs from enzymatic degradation and control release are required for prolonged retention and biological activity of the proteins in the body. Chitosan and chitosan derivatives have received a great deal of attention as materials of choice for the preparation of micro- and nano-particles for parenteral, nasal, ophthalmic, transdermal and implantable delivery of proteins. In this review, potential of chitosan and chitosan derivatives as carriers of proteins is reported.
